While I can’t answer the “why” question you’re surely asking, the reason I’m sharing this is that being part of his support and pacing crew reminded me how strong humans can be—not only physically but mentally. Over the course of the day, I saw him at his highest of highs and the lowest of lows. At times, it seemed impossible, and yet he finished.

I suspect we’ve all faced our own version of a 100-mile race at some point this past year. Working from home, homeschooling our kids, safeguarding our parents, developing business via Zoom, maintaining physical distance. Pardon me for stating the obvious, but all of these things are hard. And, guess what, friends? You are doing it. We are doing it!

I recently finished up the planning, production, and execution of our twice-yearly company meeting. It’s no surprise we’ve had to pivot from in-person to on-camera. And while our meeting last summer was also virtual, we opted to post the content on our company Intranet. This time, we dove right into a live broadcast.

I’d love to tell you that this year’s company meeting and the planning involved were a piece of cake, but I’d be lying. Truthfully, it was one of the most challenging work projects I’ve undertaken. Was it perfect? Um, no! Am I better for it? Heck, yes!

What do you consider to be your 100-mile race? Whether you’ve decided to take on a tremendous challenge or the difficulties have been handed to you, I encourage you to acknowledge that you, too, can accomplish hard things.

And know that the Society and SMPS Foundation are here to help get us through the hard times—and to celebrate the good ones.

Article written by SMPS Foundation President-Elect Andrea Goodwin, CPSM.
